The Power of Intention: A Guide to Setting Your Theme and Goals for 2025

This morning, as I poured hot water over my tea leaves, I reflected on the simple act of steeping—how it takes time for the flavors to emerge, for the water to transform, for something ordinary to become something nourishing.


And I realized: This is exactly how we set the tone for our lives.


Each year, we enter with new ambitions, ideas, and energy, but without intention, these goals remain like dry tea leaves—full of potential yet unrealized. The study of the brain functions tells us that our brains thrive on clarity and consistency. The way we frame our goals influences not only our motivation but also our neural pathways, determining how likely we are to sustain the changes we desire.


For me, 2025 is about Faith, Flow, and Velocity. My word for the year is Focused Intentionality—ensuring that everything I commit to aligns with my values, allows for deep engagement, and moves me forward with purpose. If you, too, want to set your year up for success, let’s walk through my 4-Step Framework for designing a year that is deeply aligned with your brain’s natural rhythms.


Step 1: Anchor Your Year with a Theme

Our brains are wired to seek patterns. A clear theme for your year acts as an anchor, providing continuity and making decision-making easier. Instead of setting random resolutions, think about the bigger narrative of your life.

Ask yourself: What is the central lesson, mindset, or growth area I want to embody this year?

Example: My theme for 2025 is Faith, Flow, and Velocity—ensuring that everything I do is rooted in trust, sustained by consistency, and propelled by momentum.


When we set a theme, our reticular activating system (the brain’s filter for information) starts recognizing opportunities, habits, and choices that align with it. This means our brains naturally begin supporting us in reinforcing the identity we set for ourselves.


Step 2: Choose Your Pillars of Focus

Rather than setting scattered goals, break your year into clear pillars that reflect different aspects of your life. Think of these as the foundational areas that, if nurtured, will create a ripple effect across everything else.

My 2025 Pillars:

  1. Well-being & Spiritual Grounding – Prioritizing consistent sleep, movement, nourishment, and spiritual alignment.

  2. Professional Growth & Learning – Excelling in my field, deepening my expertise, and making meaningful career moves.

  3. Creative Expansion – Honing my craft, embracing artistic expression, and sharing more of my work.

  4. Business & Financial Strategy – Building sustainable growth, expanding my reach, and increasing impact.

  5. Community & Service – Cultivating meaningful relationships and giving back in ways that align with my purpose.


Studies show that when we focus on a few key areas rather than overwhelming ourselves with too many goals, we activate the prefrontal cortex more effectively, allowing for better decision-making, habit formation, and long-term follow-through.


Step 3: Build Systems, Not Just Goals

Motivation alone is fleeting. What truly sustains progress are the systems we put in place to support our goals. Systems reduce decision fatigue and make success inevitable.

Example Systems for 2025:

  • Well-being: Establishing a structured sleep schedule, meal planning on weekends to maintain energy levels, and incorporating movement into my daily routine (such as morning yoga and evening walks).

  • Career & Learning: Creating a dedicated study space, using a time-blocking system for deep work, and setting weekly priorities to stay on track with professional development.

  • Creativity: Scheduling creative work sessions twice a week, keeping an idea journal for inspiration, and setting monthly mini-projects to build consistency.

  • Business: Planning content in advance for social media and newsletters, tracking key performance indicators, and implementing a financial system to manage expenses and investments effectively.

  • Faith & Service: Blocking time for prayer journaling, attending faith-based events, and committing to a set number of volunteer hours per month.


The brain loves automation. When we build routines around our goals, we shift behaviors from the prefrontal cortex (which requires effort) to the basal ganglia (where habits live). The more automated our habits become, the less willpower we need to sustain them.


Step 4: Attach Meaningful Rewards

We are wired for dopamine-driven reinforcement. Attaching a meaningful reward system to our goals keeps motivation high without relying on external validation.

Examples of My 2025 Rewards:

  • Well-being: Booking a wellness retreat or spa day as a quarterly reward for maintaining health habits.

  • Career & Learning: Investing in a high-quality planner or tech upgrade after completing a major milestone.

  • Creativity: Treating myself to an art supply haul or a museum visit after finishing a project.

  • Business: Planning a trip or self-care experience when revenue or impact goals are met.

  • Faith & Service: Hosting a community gathering or retreat to celebrate spiritual and personal growth.


Dopamine, the brain’s “feel-good” chemical, spikes when we anticipate rewards. Structuring small and big milestones along the way keeps the journey engaging and sustainable.



Bringing It All Together

This is not just about productivity—it’s about living with intention. Studies of the brain functions show that the way we frame our goals affects how deeply we commit to them. When we create a theme, clarify our pillars, build systems, and reward progress, we create an environment where success isn’t just a possibility—it’s the default.
